The 15th edition drew more than 1,100 delegates to Bangkok, and the tone on investment was noticeably more measured than in recent years.
The 15th Thailand Tourism Forum was held on 22 January at The Athenee Hotel in Bangkok, drawing more than 1,100 industry leaders under the theme A World of Change. The forum is organised by C9 Hotelworks as a not-for-profit platform for the Thai tourism and hotel sectors.
The programme covered the hotel investment landscape, ownership models, the split between lifestyle and traditional brands, and the role social media now plays in driving demand, with speakers drawn from STR, JLL, Horwath HTL, QUO, Central Pattana and Marriott International.
The most quoted line of the day was a warning rather than a forecast. Industry leaders described Thailand as standing at a defining nexus, pointing to infrastructure gaps at home and the rise of competing destinations, Vietnam in particular, and arguing that the country needs a strategic shift rather than a continuation of the current trajectory.
That is a notably direct assessment from a forum that could comfortably have spent a morning on recovery numbers. It is also the correct one. Regional competition is no longer a question of price; it is a question of product, infrastructure and consistency of delivery.
For a single property, national strategy is context rather than an action list. The practical reading is narrower. If the region is competing harder on product and consistency, then the properties that hold rate will be the ones that can demonstrate a standard rather than assert one, and the ones whose owners can see what is happening in the business early enough to respond.
That is an operating answer to a strategic problem, and it is available to an independent hotel today without waiting for an infrastructure programme.
